University of Portland 03/30/2012

Barry and I went up to University of Portland to hike.

West Hall

Statue of Sacajawea.,York, William Clark.

The Cascade General Dry Docks.

What could this be used for?

Barry on the trail.

Here's a long culvert going into a creek, and then to the Willamette River.

Here is a train, we may have been trespassing, on Railroad Property.

Hamilton Mountian 03/24/2012

I was the assistant who led the BCEP Hamilton Mountain hike.

The students did really well, and we had nice weather for once.

Table Mountain

The Mazamas practically took over the parking lot to Hamilton Mountain.  There were three BCEP groups up there.

Hill Military Academy 03/23/2012

Barry took me up Hill Military Academy up by Rocky Butte.  In 1901 Joesph Hill started the Hill Military Academy, it is now a Christian college

He went to school there with his brother during his middle school years.
This was his dorm room.

This was where the classrooms were.

This was the cafeteria.

We later tried and failed to find a trail up to Rocky Butte so we drove on the main road.

Here's is Rocky Butte.  Built by the WPA in 1937-1939.

This is a great shot of the the Gothic lampposts framing Mt. St. Helen's.

We then went to the Rocky Butte trail where they have some rock climbing routes.  They're were a number of climber's trails up the rock climbs.

Pre-BCEP Hike 03/17/2012

I will be assisting Bruce's BCEP group.

It was Angel's Rest, and the group brought a bunch of good snacks for the potluck.

Munra Point with The Portland Hiking Meetup Group 03/10/2012

This was "my" first Meetup event ever. I joined Meetup some time ago with a few outdoors groups that looked interesting but when the events happened they fill up so fast this is the first one that I got on. I think a lot of people have smart phones, so they can reply right away. Anyway we met up at Gateway transit Center, I had a little trouble finding them because their were like five groups meeting up including at least two groups form the Mazamas.

I finally met the hike leader Rick and was had a group of ten hikers to hike Murna Point and the south ridge.

We were amongst the clouds the whole way up to Munra Point.

Here's a picture of me, we had light rain most of the day.

Here's me on the summit.

We hiked about two miles on the south ridge.  I think we were close to the Bull Run Watershed closure.

Here's a newt I found on the trail.

Here is some historical data on Munra Point from "Oregon Geographic Names" by McArthur...Munra Point was named in 1915 in honor of Katherine Sterrett Munra, who for many years kept a railroad eating house at Bonneville and later at Meacham. She was a widely known pioneer woman, and her name was attached to the point in question by a committee representing various Oregon historical organizations. In 1928 Union Pacific Railroad named a station for "Grandma" Munra.

Snow Camping Skill Builder 03/03/2012

I went on a Mazamas Skill Builder this weekend. There was a lecture during the week which discussed avalanche danger and the types of gear which may be needed.

When we got to the spot we were going to camp, we had to make our tent platforms and set up the two Megamids.

Here's a group member that made a snow trench.  This took about a hour and is what I would use in an emergency.

Here's the beginning of my snow cave.  I really like the G3 shovel I bought.  The snow cave took me about half a day.  At least four hours.

Here's me and Adam in the Megamid.  A Megamid is made by Black Diamond and is a tent used for cooking mainly used for cold weather expeditions.  The floor, and benches and table is carved out of ice and snow.

Here is my snow cave and the Mt. Hood.

A group shot of the class with Mt. Hood behind.  Some of photographs are taken my team and are copyrighted.

Mountaineering First Aid

One of my birthday presents this year was to attend MFA class, it was five lectures and a weekend session at the Mazama Lodge.

That is make up on my face as a had some lacerations as the patient.

I was the patient here with an impaled branch handing out of my arm.  We alternated being the patient and first aiders throughout the course.

On Sunday we went out in the field and did mass casualty incidents.

Here's is my MFA card.  Some of these photos were taken by my team and are copyrighted.
